Effects of food supplements on periodontal status and local and systemic inflammation after nonoperative periodontal treatment

Abstract: The present study aimed to assess the effects of a multimicronutrient food supplement on periodontal clinical parameters and systemic/local inflammatory markers. Thirty patients with severe chronic periodontitis who adhered to the Mediterranean diet (MD) underwent non-surgical therapy and daily took either the micronutrient complex (group-A) or olive oil (group-B) from baseline (T0) to 3 months (T2). Supragingival debridement was performed at T0. One month later (T1), one-stagefull-mouth disinfection was perfo… Show more

“…As the protein level decreased, there was also a decrease in the number of TRAP-positive cells. Supporting these results, Rasperini et al [ 38 ] evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation on periodontal clinical parameters and systemic inflammatory markers in patients with severe CP. Supragingival debridement was performed, and periodontal clinical parameters were monitored and correlated with both serum C-reactive protein and MMP levels.…”

“…As protein decreased, there was also a decrease in BL area. Supporting these results, Rasperini et al (2019) (44) evaluated the effects of a dietary supplement on periodontal clinical parameters and systemic inflammatory markers in patients with severe chronic periodontitis. Supragingival debridement was performed, and periodontal clinical parameters were monitored and correlated with serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and matrix metalloproteinase.…”

“…CRP serum levels were reduced after 3 months in both groups, but not enough to reach statistical significance. Overall, even though micronutrients are suspected to provide a beneficial effect on periodontal tissues by reducing inflammation and damage due to inflammatory diseases [ 97 ], MD did not affect local and systemic inflammatory parameters, except for a slight decrease in MMP saliva levels [ 90 ].…”
