Effects of fructo-oligosaccharide-supplemented infant cereal: a double-blind, randomized trial

Abstract: Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) may have potential benefits, since they exhibit many soluble dietary fibre-like properties. Foods currently available for weaning infants are generally low in fibre content and lack these potential benefits. Data documenting tolerance of FOS in weaning foods are greatly lacking. Our present objective was to evaluate the tolerance and gastrointestinal effects of FOS-supplemented infant cereal used as a daily addition to the diet of healthy infants. Healthy infants were randomly ass… Show more

“…Recent data from studies with infants show that oligofructose increases stool frequency (Euler et al, 2005) and/or leads to softer stools (Moore et al, 2003;Bongers et al, 2007), whereas inulin consumption in formula-fed babies had a positive effect on stool mass at a consumption of about 1.5 g/day with a trend for softer consistency (Kim et al, 2007). The same effects have been reported for the GOS/FOS mixture, as described by Knol et al (2005).…”

“…Some studies also demonstrated a decrease in the levels of opportunistic pathogens, such as Escherichia coli, Enterococcus and clostridia with prebiotic supplementation. 92,97,103 As 'selectivity' was previously considered as a key characteristic of prebiotics, many studies focused on documenting changes in the abundance of specific groups/ species of bacteria, such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, using traditional plate counting or by Table 2. Impact of prebiotic supplementation on the composition of infant microbiota.…”

“…Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are naturally occurring oligosaccharides consisted of glucose molecules and fructose joined by Beta 1,2 glycosidic linkages nondigestible at the brush border by enzymes of the small intestine, highly fermentable in the colon 1 .…”
