Effects of human recombinant interleukin-1β on protein synthesis in rat tissues compared with a classical acute-phase reaction induced by turpentine. Rapid response of muscle to interleukin-1β

Abstract: The early time course (1, 3, 9, 24 h) of changes in rates of protein synthesis (ks) in liver and three different muscles (gastrocnemius, soleus and heart) was investigated after injection of saline, interleukin-1 beta (IL-1) or turpentine in rats. IL-1 injection induced a consistent increase in body temperature of about 3 degrees C between 3 and 5 h, but thereafter a hypothermic response occurred. With turpentine, a delayed fever response with a peak value by 9 h was observed. Both IL-1 and turpentine had no e… Show more

“…51 Scatter acute phase response. 57 Recently, these findings have been confirmed with protein binds to the p80 receptor. 62 In contrast, the transgenic mice either lacking a functional IL-1b or IL-1 type II receptor is a decoy receptor.…”

“…Endotoxin and sepsis elevate blood and tissue inflammatory cytokines-such as IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-␣ (10)-that regulate various aspects of muscle metabolism (3,22,36,37). However, whereas TNF-␣ has been shown to decrease IGFBP-5 secretion from C 2 myocytes (41), IL-1 and IL-6 have been reported to increase IGFBP-5 in cultured chondrocytes and osteoblasts (15,53).…”

“…Changes in protein metabolism include depressing skeletal muscle protein synthesis (Jepson et al, 1986), stimulating skeletal muscle protein degradation Klasing et al, 1987), and increasing liver and heart protein synthesis (Ballmer et al, 1991). These changes in metabolism suggest altered nutritional requirements during immunologic challenge.…”
