Effects of Kinesio taping for stroke patients with hemiplegic shoulder pain: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the effects of Kinesio taping for stroke patients with hemiplegic shoulder pain. Design: Double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Subjects: Twenty-one stroke patients with hemiplegic shoulder pain within 6 months of stroke onset in the rehabilitation ward of a medical university hospital in Taiwan. “…Typical interventions for PSP range from neuromuscular or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation of motor or sensory nerves for pain relief, application of supportive devices such as tape, to pharmacological therapy, including botulinum toxin, subacromial or intraarticular glenohumeral corticosteroid injections, or nerve blockers ( 1 ). Nevertheless, there is inconclusive evidence for the effectiveness of shoulder taping in reducing PSP ( 11 13 ). Manual techniques such as positioning, stretching, ROM exercises, or massage likely promote comfort only due to the lack of empirical evidence for their effects ( 1 , 14 ).…”

“…Elastic tapes, called Kinesio Tapes, are attached to the target muscles to normalize actions of the agonistic muscles of the joints. Therapies using these tapes are known to be helpful in treating various diseases including stroke and relieving pain by maintaining postural stability, improving the proprioceptive senses, and promoting circulation of blood, lymph, and tissue fluid 16 ) .…”

“…All patients were male. The study population had an age range of 10-16 years, the mean age of the study participants was 13.18 (10-16) years, and their mean BMI was 19.6 (17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22). When we compared the kinesio and sham taping groups, they did not show significant differences in terms of 1st week, 1st month, 3rd month, and 6th month VAS scores (p > 0.05) ( Table 1).…”

“…Hundreds of studies have been conducted on the efficacy of kinesio taping since its first introduction; it has been reported to have favorable effects in a considerable portion of these studies [18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25].…”
