Effects of Korean Red Ginseng extract on busulfan-induced dysfunction of the male reproductive system

Abstract: BackgroundAnticancer agents induce a variety of adverse effects when administered to cancer patients. Busulfan is a known antileukemia agent. When administered for treatment of leukemia in young patients, busulfan could cause damage to the male reproductive system as one of its adverse effects, resulting in sterility.MethodsWe investigated the effects of Korean Red Ginseng extract (KRGE) on busulfan-induced damage and/or dysfunction of the male reproductive system.ResultsWe found that administration of busulfa… Show more

“…22 Jung and colleagues reported that 40 mg/kg of busulfan caused injury to testicular tissue as well as reduction of sperm parameters and testosterone hormone. 23 Another study showed that busulfan administration caused a reduction in sperm parameters and glutathione peroxidase levels as well as increase in caspase 3 and MDA level. 24 Dehghani et al induced infertility rat model by injection of busulfan.…”

“…Three-week-old ICR male mice were given a single injection of 40 mg/kg body weight (BW) of busulfan. 37 The following day, the mice were dosed with ddH 2 O as the control or AOS 10 mg/kg BW via oral gavage (0.1 ml/mouse/day). Our preliminary experiments had found that 10 mg/kg was the best concentration for recovering the intestinal epithelial cell damage caused by busulfan.…”

“…The severity of dermatitis was assessed using the method described by Yamamoto et al 22) The severity of dermatitis was evaluated once, just before euthanization of the experimental animals. The development of (1) erythema/hemorrhage, (2) scarring/dryness, (3) edema, and (4) excoriation/erosion was evaluated using the following scoring system: 0 (none), 1 (mild), 2 (moderate), and 3 (severe).…”
