Effects of lanthanum in cellular systems

Abstract: Lanthanum belongs to the group of elements known as "lanthanons," which also includes cerium, europium, promethium, and thulium. It is the most electropositive element of the rare earth group, is uniformly trivalent, and is similar in its chemical properties to the alkaline earth elements. The effects of this element and its compounds on cellular systems are of considerable interest because of their increasing use in industry and as a substitute or antagonist for calcium in a variety of cellular reactions. Lan… Show more

“…The concentration of La found in smelter's lungs was 2 to 16 times higher than in normal lungs (12); La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb, and Lu were found in a deceased photoengraver's lungs (13). These workers are at risk of pneumoconiosis; one worker, who had been exposed for only 18 months to dust containing 60% of RE (mainly Ce, La, and Nd), was reported to have radiologic evidence of pneumoconiosis (14).…”

“…The results showed the largest influence of Ce and La on viability and inflammatory response, followed by Pr and Nd. Especially the light REE La, Ce and Pr are known to be hepatotoxic by inducing fatty liver 17,48 . Pr is the most toxic element leading to animal death in comparable concentrations used for Ce, probably due to its low clearing rate 17 .…”

“…Metabolism and toxicity of REEs have been investigated to date by oral, intravenous, and intraperitoneal administration and instillation or intratracheal instillation in rats, dogs, mice, hamsters, and chicks (Durbin et al, 1956;Magnusson, 1963;Haley et al, 1964a,b;Sihvonen, 1972;Arvela, 1979, Das et al, 1988Evans, 1990;Hirano et al, 1996). Fatty liver was observed in female rats administered light REEs intravenously (Snyder et al, 1959(Snyder et al, , 1960; however, the differences between REEs in terms of behavior in vivo have not yet been clarified.…”
