Effects of Leonardite Application on Yield of Broad Beans (Vicia faba L.) under Low Input Rainfed Semi-arid Mediterranean Highland Condition of Turkey

Abstract: Background: This study was conducted to determine the effects of different doses of leonardite applications on yield and some yield components of spring grown broad beans (Vicia faba L.) in the ecological conditions of Siirt province in 2017 and 2019 in the experimental fields of Siirt University. Methods: The study was established in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Tested leonardite doses were 0, 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 kg ha-1. Conclusion: The effect of leonardite doses on all… Show more

“…Key benefits of organic fertilizers include the enhancement of soil texture, increased water retention, and improved resistance to erosion (Sharma & Chetani, 2017). Organic fertilizers are mainly cost-effective, and readily available from local materials, in contrast to chemical fertilizers (Solomon Wisdom et al, 2012;Ucar et al, 2021).…”

“…The treatment resulted in increased HFP from 10.1 to 12.7 (cm) and from 11 to 13.2 (cm) (26 and 29%, respectively) over 2 years of tests. Similarly, the PH of broad beans was also increased in a field trial after leonardite application (Uçar et al, 2021). However, applications of fertilisers can have a general response to plant growth and not related to a specific change in HFP; therefore, published results for fertilisers need to be considered more carefully.…”

“…The organic fertiliser leonardite is an oxidised form of lignite obtained from coal mines and an important component for sustainable agriculture in Turkey. It has soil amendment potential and positive effects on crop growth and yield (Uçar et al, 2021). Leonardite was applied to soil at a dosage of 1 tonne/ha before sowing seeds of broad bean cv.…”

“…On the other hand, combinations of chemical fertilizer + biofertilizer increased plant growth and photosynthesis activity in mung bean [4]. Leonardite that sources of humic acid for soil amendent is one of the important organic fertilizer for plant growth and its using increased in recently year [9,10]. Leonardite is a natural organic material through the decomposition process and this organic material is considered as an oxidized form of lignite [11,12].…”
