USA beef production is characterized by a diversity of climates, environmental conditions, animal phenotypes, management systems, and a multiplicity of nutritional inputs. The USA beef herd consists of more than 80 breeds of cattle and crosses thereof, and the industry is divided into distinct, but ofttimes overlapping sectors, including seedstock production, cow-calf production, stocker/backgrounding, and feedlot. Exception for male dairy calves, production is predominantly pastoral-based, with young stock spending relatively brief portions of their life in feedlots. The beef industry is very technology driven, utilizing reproductive management strategies, genetic improvement technologies, exogenous growth promoting compounds, vaccines, antibiotics, and feed processing strategies, focusing on improvements in efficiency and cost of production. Young steers and heifers are grain-based diets fed for an average of 5 months, mostly in feedlots of 1,000 head capacity or more, and typically are slaughtered at 15 to 28 months of age to produce tender, well-marbled beef. Per capita beef consumption is nearly 26 kg annually, over half of which is consumed in the form of ground products. Beef exports, which are increasingly important, consist primarily of high value cuts and variety meats, depending on destination. In recent years, adverse climatic conditions (i.e., draught), a shrinking agricultural workforce, emergence of food-borne pathogens, concerns over development of antimicrobial resistance, animal welfare/well-being, environmental impact, consumer perceptions of healthfulness of beef, consumer perceptions of food animal production practices, and alternative uses of traditional feed grains have become increasingly important with respect to their impact on both beef production and demand for beef products. Similarly, changing consumer demographics and globalization of beef markets have dictated changes in the types of products demanded by consumers of USA beef, both domestically and abroad. The industry is highly adaptive, however, and responds quickly to evolving economic signals.

RESUMO.Os abscessos hepáticos são considerados sequelas de quadros de acidose ruminal e ruminites em bovinos alimentados com dietas ricas em carboidratos altamente fermentáveis, e pobres em volumoso. O Fusobacterium necrophorum é o principal agente etiológico, e o segundo patógeno mais frequentemente isolado é o Arcanobacterium pyogenes, atualmente denominado de Trueperella pyogenes. Na maioria das vezes os abscessos hepáticos são diagnosticados e encontrados no exame post-mortem durante o abate dos bovinos, pois raramente há manifestação de sinais clínicos. Macroscopicamente eles são observados como uma área de inflamação purulenta, envolvida por uma cápsula de tecido conjuntivo fibroso, que pode variar em espessura e tamanho, atingindo até 15 cm de diâmetro. Os abscessos hepáticos são apontados como um enorme problema econômico para produtores e também para a indústria frigorifica, já que são associados a uma diminuição no consumo da dieta, ganho de peso, rendimento de carcaça e a condenação do fígado. Portanto, há uma busca incessante para prevenir e reduzir a incidência de abscessos hepáticos, principalmente por meios alternativos ao uso de antibióticos, como a produção de vacinas e a manipulação das dietas, uma vez que a utilização de antibióticos é contestada por diversos países devido ao risco de induzir a resistência antimicrobiana em humanos. Desta forma, o objetivo desta revisão é reunir e discutir informações a respeito da incidência dos abscessos hepáticos em bovinos, bem como sua importância econômica, etiologia, patogenia, diagnóstico e prevenção. Liver abscesses are considered sequelae of rumen acidosis and ruminits in cattle fed diets rich in highly fermentable carbohydrates and poor in roughage. Fusobacterium necrophorum is the main etiological agent and the second most frequently isolated pathogen is Arcanobacterium pyogenes, currently known as Trueperella pyogenes. Most of the time, liver abscesses are diagnosed and found in the postmortem examination during the slaughter of cattle, because there is rarely a manifestation of clinical signs. Macroscopically, liver abscesses are seen as an area of purulent inflammation, surrounded by a fibrous connective tissue capsule, which can vary in thickness and size, reaching up to 15 cm in diameter. Liver abscesses are identified as a huge economic problem for producers and also for the meat industry, since they are associated with a decrease in dietary intake, weight gain, carcass yield and the condemnation of the liver. Therefore, there is an incessant search to prevent and reduce the incidence of liver abscesses, mainly through alternative means to the use of antibiotics, such as the production of vaccines and the manipulation of the diets, since the use of antibiotics is contested by several countries due to the risk to induce antimicrobial resistance in humans. Not All Liver Abscesses Are Created Equal: The Impact of Tylosin and Antibiotic Alternatives on Bovine Liver Abscess Microbial Communities and a First Look at Bacteroidetes-Dominated Communities

Liver abscesses (LAs) are extremely prevalent in cattle and result in significant economic losses due to liver condemnation, decreased growth and production, and lower carcass quality. LAs are commonly attributed to the transition to diets high in rapidly fermentable starch which results in rumen epithelial inflammation that allows pathogenic bacteria to gain entry to liver through transport via the hepatic portal vein. The most common intervention for LAs is the inclusion of antibiotics in feedlot diets, under the supervision of a veterinarian; this treatment is associated with reduced occurrence of LAs in this and other studies. Here, through the largest LA 16S rRNA gene sequencing study to date, we demonstrate that the inclusion of tylosin and antibiotic alternatives (the essential oil limonene and Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product) had little impact on LA microbial community composition. Importantly, members of Bacteroidetes (Bacteroides spp. and Porphyromonas spp.) were identified as the dominant taxa in conjunction with low proportions of Fusobacteria in nearly a quarter (61/259) of all LA communities analyzed in this study. The relative abundances of the phyla Fusobacteria and Bacteroidetes had a strongly negative correlation, and LA microbial communities rarely contained high abundances of both of these dominant phyla. Further, based on the presence of taxa discriminant of Bacteroidetes-dominated LAs within over 400 bovine gut communities, we provide evidence suggestive of Bacteroidetes-dominated abscess communities originating in more distal portions of the bovine gut. Together, these findings suggest that some LA microbial communities may originate from portions of the gut other than the rumen.
