Effects of loading frequency and stress reversal on fatigue life of plain concrete

Abstract: The effects of loading frequency and stress reversal on the fatigue properties of concrete were investigated by conducting flexural fatigue tests on plain concrete beams. A new fatigue equation based on the classical Aas-Jakobsen S—N equation is proposed which contains the above effects. This equation agrees well with previous experimental results and proves to be suitable for some other loading states other than bending.

“…At present, it is accepted that frequency values between 1 and 15 Hz hardly have any influence on fatigue life, provided that the maximum stress level is not over 75% of the compressive strength [22][23][24][25][26]. Noteworthy is the research developed by Zhang and Wu [27], which proposed, for the first time, an S-N curve as a function of the frequency of the cyclic load.…”

“…However, majority of them focused only on obtaining the number of load cycles to failure (N f ) under constant stress limits. A strong dependence of fatigue life on the upper stress level max σ has been observed (Holmen 1982 -Jakobsen 1970;Tepfers, Kutti 1979;Stemland et al 1990;Zhang et al 1996). A model proposed by Hsu (1981) is the most applicable due to the inclusion of additional parameters that other authors neglect:…”

“…Zhang B [3] studied the stress value and the influence of loading frequency on concrete fatigue life through experiment, though that the residual strain accumulated gradually and deformation modulus degenerated constantly in the process of fatigue damage, and established fatigue damage model of concrete under uniaxial compressive.Shibin Li [4] obtained a method to prediction the fatigue life of concrete beam through the limited time of fatigue load. Zhong Ming [5] regressed and deduced the calculation formula of crack width.…”
