Effects of meat bone meal as fertilizer on leaf nitrogen status in sugar beet and on soil nitrate concentrations

Abstract: Meat and bone meal (MBM) as a by-product from meat industry, is an important source for recycling of N and P. It contains about 8 % N, 5 % P, 1 % K and 10 % Ca. Field experiments were carried out for testing fertilization effect of MBM on yield and quality of sugar beet (2008)(2009)) and of carrot (2011)(2012) in Finland and comparing with mineral fertilizer in conventional farming methods. In these experiments, MBM returned fair yields and generally better quality, in comparison to conventional mineral fertil… Show more

“…In the present study, the effect of 2.0 and 3.0 t ha −1 MBM treatments and, consequently, the accumulation of nutrient amounts ensure sufficient amounts to obtain high yields (2016 and 2017), which are even higher than those following the mineral fertilisation. However, according to Kivelä [37] and Kivalä et al [38], the supply of nitrogen from MBM for production of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L. subsp. vulgaris) is not sufficient to obtain the same yields as for mineral fertilisers.…”

“…MBM contains approximately 5% of phosphorus making it an important source for phosphorus recycling. The use of MBM as fertilizers has been tested to various crops such as, ryegrass, barley and oats, where there has been a marked increase in grain yields [11]. Besides MBM, eggshells are also known to be used as an external source of phosphorus in the agricultural practice [12].…”
