With increasing the demand of urban greenery, market of landscape trees using container has grown steadily. However, there has been little research on the proper fertilizer application for various landscape trees using container. This study was conducted to investigate optimal fertilizer intensity for Crataegus pinnatifida to produce landscape trees using container. The main objective of this study was to examine effects of fertilization treatments (Con., 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 g/L) on the growth characteristics of Crataegus pinnatifida. In this study, Crataegus pinnatifida showed the highest growth of tree height (TH), root collar diameter (RCD), dry biomass weight (DBW) and Seedling Quality Index (SQI) in 1.0 g･L-1 treatment (p<.05). Especially, 1.0 g･L-1 treatment showed 4 to 9 times better quality than other treatments in SQI. In the case of height/root collar diameter (H/D) ratio and top/root (T/R) ratio, there were no significant differences between the treatments (p>.05). Soil-plant analysis development (SPAD) value on 2.0 g･L-1 treatment was much higher than that on other treatments (p<.05), but 2.0 g･L-1 treatment showed lower value than 1.0 g･L-1 treatment in the growth of TH, RCD, DBW and SQI. Therefore, our results support that 1.0 g･L-1 could be more economical and environmental than 2.0 g･L-1 , which is the highest fertilizer intensity on Crataegus pinnatifida's container production.

Background and objective: This study was conducted to establish a stable seedling production system for Veronica pusanensis Y.N. Lee, a plant that is endemic to the Korean Peninsula and is a critically endangered species, distributed along the coast of Busan, Korea.Methods: In order to investigate the plug cell size (72, 128, 200 cells), soil type (commercial substrate, and mixed substrates with peat moss and perlite at ratios of 1:1, 3:1, and 4:1), and fertilizer concentration (Peters 0, 500, 1,000, and 2,000 mg⋅L-1) conditions, the plug tray was filled with soil and seeds were sown. The sown trays were placed in the growth chamber (25°C, 70% RH, PPFD 100 μmol⋅m-2⋅s-1) for three repetitions per treatment.Results: There was no difference in the growth of seedlings according to plug cell size. Therefore, it appears to be economically superior to produce seedlings in a 200-cell plug tray. In soil type, the seedling growth increased as the ratio of peat increased, but leaf chlorosis occurred from the 7th week after sowing. Examining the growth of seedlings based on fertilizer concentration, the greatest increase in growth was found to have occurred in the 1,000 mg⋅L-1 treatment.Conclusion: Therefore, for the production of V. pusanesis seedlings, it was noted that when mixed soil with peatmoss and perlite at a ratio of 4:1 is filled in 200-cell plug trays, and the seedlings are fertilized with Peters 1,000 mg⋅L-1 once a week, growth will increase the most, demonstrating excellent cost-effectiveness. However, to mass-produce high-quality seedlings in a short period, it will be necessary to use a plug tray smaller than 200 cells or to conduct various fertilization composition studies.

In this study, the effects of soil conditions on antioxidant activities of the aerial and underground parts of rosemary were assessed to determine the most effective soil conditions for cultivation. The antioxidant activity was the highest (51.58±2.93 µg/mL) when cultivated in the mixture of gardening soil and vermiculite using DPPH assay. The antioxidant activity of underground parts the highest (127.48±12.38 µg/mL) when cultivated in the mixture of soil, vermiculite, and perlite. ABTS assay showed that the antioxidant activity of aerial parts was 230.34±57.93 µg•mL −1 when cultivated in the mixture of gardening soil and vermiculite and that of underground parts was 320.98±16.04 µg•mL −1 when cultivated in the mixture of gardening soil, vermiculite, and perlite. The total phenolic content of aerial parts was the highest (155.25±2.96 mg GAE/g) when cultivated in the mixture of gardening soil. The total flavonoid content of aerial parts was the highest (67.32±5.27 mg QE/g) when cultivated in the mixture of gardening soil. Therefore, the mixture of gardening soil, vermiculite, and perlite is superior to gardening soil alone for cultivation of rosemary to increase its antioxidant activity as well as total phenolic and flavonoid content.
