Effects of Methyl Jasmonate on Anthocyanin Accumulation, Ethylene Production, and CO2 Evolution in Uncooled and Cooled Tulip Bulbs

Abstract: Effects of methyl jasmonate (JA-Me) on anthocyanin accumulation, ethylene production, and CO 2 evolution in uncooled and cooled tulips (Tulipa gesneriana L. cvs. Apeldoorn and Gudoshnik) were studied. JA-Me stimulated anthocyanin accumulation in stems and leaves from uncooled and cooled bulbs of both cultivars. The highest level of anthocyanin accumulation was observed in leaves from cooled bulbs treated with 200 L/liter JA-Me. In sprouting bulbs treated with 100 L/liter and higher concentrations of JA-Me, the… Show more

“…Biosynthesis of light-dependent anthocyanins in hypocotyls of buckwheat seedlings was greatly inhibited by MJ applied as vapors or as water solution, although PAL activity was unchanged (Horbowicz et al 2008). The results are opposite to the stimulatory effect of MJ, used in lanolin paste, on forming of anthocyanins in other plants (Saniewski et al 1998;Saniewski et al 2003;Saniewski et al 2006).…”

“…As was previously published, MJ has a stimulatory effect on anthocyanins accumulation in hypocotyls of lightgrown soybean seedlings (Franceschi and Grimes 1991), in shoots of wild Arabidopsis thaliana (Feys et al 1994), in detached corollas of Petunia (Tamari et al 1995), in the stem and leaves of tulips (Saniewski et al 1998a), in peach shoots (Saniewski et al 1998b), in cell cultures of Vaccinium pahalae (Fang et al 1999), in apple fruits (Kondo et al 2001), in suspension cultures of Vitis vinifera (Zhang et al 2002), and in shoots of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana (Saniewski et al 2003). However, MJ may also inhibit biosynthesis of anthocyanins, as has been recently found in hypocotyls, but not in cotyledons of young buckwheat seedlings ).…”

“…It can be possible that all jasmonates vapors induce biosynthesis of defense compounds, like phenolics, which can inhibit a plant growth. It is a well known phenomenon in case of JA and MJ (Saniewski et al 1998a(Saniewski et al , b, 2003. Recently it has been found that cis-jasmone also induces production of wheat secondary metabolites, which are responsible for the plant defense system against pests and diseases (Blassioli Moraes et al 2008).…”

“…(Franceschi and Grimes, 1991), Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. seedlings (Feys et al, 1994), in stems and leaves of the tulip (Tulipa gesneriana L.) (Saniewski et al, 1998), in a suspension culture of Vitis vinifera cells (Zhang et al, 2002;Curtin et al, 2003) and in cell cultures of Vaccinium pahalae (Fang et al, 1999). JA-Me added to growth medium induced anthocyanin accumulation and influenced on the composition in the sweet potato cell suspension cultures (Plata et al, 2003).…”
