Effects of mineral amendments on trace elements leaching from pre-treated marine sediment after simulated rainfall events

Abstract: Bauxite extraction by-products (red mud) were used to evaluate their potential ability to stabilize trace elements from dredged and aerated/humidified marine sediment. The investigated by-products were: bauxaline(BX) that is a press-filtered red mud; bauxsol™(BS) that is a press-filtered red mud previously washed with excess of seawater, and gypsum neutralized bauxaline (GBX). These materials were separately mixed to dredged composted sediment sample considering 5% and 20% sediment: stabilizer ratios. For pilo… Show more

“…Subsequently, the levels of minerals, potassium (K), sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), and cadmium (Cd), were detected by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry [28]. …”

“…These carbon-based materials will subsequently be referred to as biochar 1 (Bc1), biochar 2 (Bc2), and AC, respectively. Similarly, three redmuds were employed: a commercial redmud (Bauxaline) provided by Alteo Environnement (Gardanne, France), the same redmud neutralized by gypsum (Hurel, Taneez, Ghirardini, & Libralato, 2017), also provided by Alteo Environnement, and a redmud directly collected from a charcoal mine located in Alès, France. Those three products will be referred to as redmud 1 (RM1), redmud 2 (RM2), and redmud 3 (RM3).…”
