Effects of Mould Temperature on Rice Bran-Based Bioplastics Obtained by Injection Moulding

Abstract: The high production rate of conventional plastics and their low degradability result in severe environmental problems, such as plastic accumulation and some other related consequences. One alternative to these materials is the production of oil-free bioplastics, based on wastes from the agro-food industry, which are biodegradable. Not only is rice bran an abundant and non-expensive waste, but it is also attractive due to its high protein and starch content, which can be used as macromolecules for bioplastic pr… Show more

“…This is confirmed by the results of the research in which the influence of increasing the mold temperature was studied. It was possible to obtain better strength properties [ 36 , 37 , 38 ], an example of this is the increase in strength of flexible hinges [ 39 ]. As well as aesthetic properties of the products [ 29 , 40 , 41 ].…”

“…The chemical composition of RB was already characterized by Alonso-González et al [ 13 ]. The approximate composition of DRB and FRB flours was determined following the approved methods of A.O.A.C.…”

“…All blends contained 55% active matter and 45% total plasticizer, maintaining the proportion of 2:1 water-G/S. The proportions were selected according to previous studies [ 13 , 14 ]. The blends were mixed at 200 rpm and 80 °C for 1 h. The systems are identified with the corresponding active matter (RB, DRB and FRB) and the plasticizer used (G or S).…”

“…To perform the process correctly, the mold temperature must be slightly higher than the T g of the protein blend. Therefore, temperatures over 60 °C should be generally selected [ 97 , 136 ]. This processing technique does not require high flowability; therefore, the obtained materials can be reinforced satisfactorily with fibers [ 27 , 137 , 138 , 139 , 140 , 141 , 142 , 143 , 144 , 145 ].…”
