Effects of nano particles on antigen-related airway inflammation in mice

Abstract: Background: Particulate matter (PM) can exacerbate allergic airway diseases. Although health effects of PM with a diameter of less than 100 nm have been focused, few studies have elucidated the correlation between the sizes of particles and aggravation of allergic diseases. We investigated the effects of nano particles with a diameter of 14 nm or 56 nm on antigen-related airway inflammation.

“…We suggest the following preventive measures: a wide laparotomy to control the inferior vena cava and have an extracorporeal bypass ready. These guidelines may prevent the fatal intraoperative pulmonary embolism as previously reported, and which occurred in two patients from our series [2].…”

“…First, we are interested in the (estimated) total weight of the polyacrylate nanoparticles detected in the lungs and/or pleural fluids obtained from the patients. In our in vivo experiments, mice were exposed seven times per week to nanoparticles (carbon black [2] and latex [3]) at the weight of 50 mg?time…”

“…These findings suggest that sensitization with MWCNT and antigen can exacerbate allergic asthmatic responses associated with increased levels of antigen specific antibodies. It has been reported that nano-sized particles, including TiO 2 and carbon black, have more prominent adjuvant effects on allergen-specific responses with Ig production [22][23][24] ; however, latex nanoparticles do not facilitate these responses. 25) These previous observations suggest that each nano-level particle has different effects on this pathology, which may depend on their characteristics.…”

“…Nanoparticles can aggravate allergenrelated airway inflammation and immunoglobulin production, being more prominent with smaller particles. The enhancement may be mediated, at least partly, by increased local expression of IL-5 and eotaxin, and also by modulated expression of IL-13, RANTES, MCP-1, and IL-6 [47].…”
