Effects of pavement texture on pavement friction: a review

Abstract: Although the sliding friction of vehicle tyres was first studied a long time ago, some fundamental aspects of the interaction mechanism and phenomenon between pavement texture and tyre tread still remain unclear. At present, most of the theoretical functions used to predict the interaction are based on experimental regressive analysis. Therefore, understanding of the interaction mechanism is rather limited. On the other hand, traffic accidents are serious problems that cause the loss of both life and property.… Show more

“…The tire is the key component of an aircraft, and tread patterns are critical features for tire design as they also affect the wear performance, especially for lateral sliding and wet conditions [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Therefore, it is essential to study the influence of tread patterns and service condition on the wear resistance of aircraft tires.…”

“…The interest in this metric lies in the frictional resistance that is generated between the vehicle tires and the pavement surface, which is a fundamental component of the driving task, allowing drivers to maneuver and guide their vehicles safely, in both longitudinal and transversal directions. With higher friction in the tire-pavement contact, drivers can better control their vehicles [4][5][6]. Road collisions are usually reported to be the result of multiple factors, normally grouped by factors related to driver, vehicle, and the roadway condition [7][8][9].…”

“…It consists of modified emulsified asphalt, aggregates, fillers, water, and additives. The number of traffic accident can be reduced if there is enough friction between tire and pavement surface [ 5 , 6 ]. Safe and comfortable conditions of micro-surfacing are directly related to abundant surface texture characteristics, which makes great contributes to skid-resistance [ 7 , 8 , 9 ].…”
