Effects of Qigong Exercise on Non-Motor Symptoms and Inflammatory Status in Parkinson’s Disease: A Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: Background: Non-motor symptoms such as sleep disturbance, cognitive decline, fatigue, anxiety, and depression in Parkinson’s disease (PD) impact quality of life. Increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in individuals with PD have been reported, which may contribute to non-motor symptoms. A mind-body exercise, Qigong, has demonstrated benefits across different medical conditions. However, a lack of evidence causes clinicians and patients to be uncertain about the effects of Qigong in individuals with PD.… Show more

“…This exercise is easy to learn and can be performed in any position including standing (preferred), sitting, or lying down, since the exercise mainly involves mild upper-body movements. 42 The type of respiratory pattern of pursed lip breathing performed by expiration to produce six different sounds (xu, he, hu, si, chui, and xi) is similar to the pursed-lips breathing in rehabilitation training for COPD patients. 43 It can modify rapid shallow breathing patterns and retard the expiratory flow rate.…”

“…Currently, the focus on investigations of different non-pharmacological interventions has increased due to side effects caused by medications such as bradykinesia and gait freezing 37 . Therefore, the importance of combining medication and concomitant physical exercise 38 . Thus, this will be the first randomized controlled trial designed with the benefits of functional training and the Mat Pilates in the non-pharmacological treatment of PD.…”

“…However, few studies have focused on PD tremor and aerobic capacity. 20 Zhan Zhuang Qigong is a basic technique in Tai Chi, and is a static, moderate and low intensity aerobic exercise combining body and mind. 21 22 Several clinical studies have reported the benefits of Tai Chi for PD motor and non-motor functions, 23 Tai Chi is a low cost exercise.…”
