Effects of soil compaction on yield and fertilizer requirement of sugar beet

Abstract: Five experiments (1967-9) on soils formed from calcareous drift examined the effects of soil compaction on seedling emergence and yield of sugar beet, also the interaction between compaction and response to nitrogen fertilizer (N) and phosphate fertilizer (P 2 O 6 ). Some seedbeds were compacted in winter, others in spring and others prepared with the minimum of compaction; each was tested with 0-6, 1-2 and 1-8 cwt/acre N plus 0-8 cwt/acre additional P 2 O 5 . All plots were given a basal dressing of 0-8 cwt/a… Show more

“…Beet grown on the most compact cultivation treatment responded in terms of increased root and sugar yield to IOO kg ha-l P,O, in 1973 only ( Table 3). This was contrary to the results of Draycott et al (1970) where responses to 200 kg ha-l P,O, were recorded on three of their five sites, the responses being confined to the least compact cultivation treatment.…”

“…A large proportion of orchard trees is infected with viruses, or other graft-transmissible subcellular agents that incite no surficially discernible response inm ost apple cultivars;however, there are a few cultivars that are sensitive to one or more spe cific agents (1,2,3,4,11,12). Rubbery wood (RW) my co plasm, by reducing lignin in vascular tissues, reduces limb rigidity and strength of Golden Delicious', 'Lord Lambourne', and several other cultivars (9, 12).…”
