Effects of Speech Rate and Background Noise on EFL Learners’ Listening Comprehension of Different Types of Materials

Abstract: The present study examined the effects of speech rate and background noise on EFL learners' listening comprehension of film and textbook materials. The participants listened to eight different types of dialogues with different conditions in the speech rate, the background noise, and the types of learning materials, and their listening comprehensibility was measured. For the speech rate factor, either a fast or a slow speech rate was used. The background noise effect was executed by adding crowd talking noise t… Show more

“…Students always consider it concerning, reminded that it cannot be fixed within themselves, which this problem is coming from outside. Fujita (2017) stated that students need to be trained with background noises to get used to this situation. Students from the second and third year mostly deal with the difficulties that may occur caused by the content of the listening text, followed by a problem related to audio and concentration.…”

“…Pre-and post-test comparisons may reveal the impact of various interventions, such as metacognitive strategy training (Li et al, 2022) and note-taking training (Tsai-Fu & Wu, 2010), or language-related phenomena, such as variations in speech rate (East & King, 2012;Fujita, 2017) or simplifying language (Gallien et al, 2000). Surveys or questionnaires can elicit a large number of responses to pre-determined criteria.…”

“…A normal speech rate is one at which listeners can typically understand a text without difficulty, whereas a threshold rate is one at which understanding begins to rapidly deteriorate (Rubin, 1994). Fujita (2017) stated that fast speech rate negatively affected learners' listening comprehension. Griffiths (1990) discovered evidence that speech rate faster than 200 w.p.m.…”
