Effects of supporting electrolyte and zeolite co-cations on the electrochemical response of zeolite-modified electrodes

Abstract: The interpretation of cyclic voltammograms observed for ion-exchanged zeolite-modified electrodes is discussed in this paper. The conditions under which intrazeolite moieties are electrochemically silent are described with emphasis on the zeolite size exclusion of electrolyte cations. The influence of zeolite co-cation on electrochemical response is addressed using silver-ion-exchanged zeolite Y containing exclusively smallchannel silver ions. Furthermore, the effects of electrolyte anions and solvent on the e… Show more

“…Figure 2 shows the cyclic voltammetry response of Cu 2 -ZSM-5-modi®ed electrode in 0.1 mol dm À3 KClO 4 aqueous solution. This voltammogram demonstrates, as has been found for Cu-Y-modi®ed electrode [10,13], that the electrochemistry of Cu 2 -ZSM-5-modi®ed electrode is sensitive to the anion present in the electrolyte solution. Indeed, the reduction in the presence of perchlorate ions seems to occur via a single two-electron step, whereas in the case of the chloride electrolyte, reduction of copper proceeds via two well-de®ned one-electron steps, probably due to the stabilization of Cu species by Cl À , as suggested by El Murr et al [23].…”

“…Because bulky Bu 4 N + cations cannot enter into the zeolite pore/ channel system ͑pore diameter 7.4 Å͒, 27,28 The electrochemical response in Fig. 4 can be described in terms of two successive one-electron oxidation processes involving an intermediate reaction ͑ECE mechanism͒ in which the formal electrode potentials of the electron-transfer processes II and III are clearly separated.…”
