Effects of Taping on Achilles Tendon Protection and Kendo Performance

Abstract: To protect the Achilles tendon, AT-Achilles taping is recommended since it tends to decrease ATF. Conversely, to enhance athlete performance, we recommend KT-Achilles taping to speed up kendo striking motion. However, the Achilles tendon must withstand greatest forces concurrently. This finding implies that AT-Achilles taping can protect the injured Achilles tendon and KT-Achilles taping can enhance performance on the kendo striking motion.

“…Twenty-two studies investigated the effects of Kinesio taping on jump performance measured as jump distance, height, flight time, execution time, power, velocity, impact, stiffness and rate of force development, in three populations. 26,28,30,33,39,40,52,55,59,63,67,70 –80 Meta-analyses were carried out for healthy people and people with chronic ankle instability.…”

“…Additionally, two meta-analyses (low evidence quality) indicated that Kinesio taping does not improve jump height and power after fatigue protocols compared to control conditions (Figure 5). Six low-quality studies were not included in meta-analyses due to differences in assessment methods, 28,55,73,77,78,80 and none of these six studies reported any difference in favor of Kinesio taping (Supplementary Material 4).…”

“…Otherwise, frequently used protective wear such as goalkeeper gloves or tape bandages cover certain injuries and complaints. The use of tape bandages − mainly for the ankle joint or Achilles tendon − is well known in football [33,34]. Goalkeepers often use such bandages to protect their finger joints.…”

“…All patients were male. The study population had an age range of 10-16 years, the mean age of the study participants was 13.18 (10-16) years, and their mean BMI was 19.6 (17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22). When we compared the kinesio and sham taping groups, they did not show significant differences in terms of 1st week, 1st month, 3rd month, and 6th month VAS scores (p > 0.05) ( Table 1).…”

“…Hundreds of studies have been conducted on the efficacy of kinesio taping since its first introduction; it has been reported to have favorable effects in a considerable portion of these studies [18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25].…”
