Effects of the administration of Lactobacilli on body growth and on the metabolic profile in growing Maltese goat kids

Abstract: -The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of some lactobacilli on body growth and on the metabolic-nutritional status in growing goat kids. Twenty growing Maltese goat kids (10 Control and 10 Bios) were studied. The animals of the Bios group received a concentrate including 1 g·kg -1 of SEB Bovino ® (spray-dried), Akron S.r.l., Italy, with non bacterial components: gum arabic, soybean meal, silicate alum of magnesium, and with bacterial components: 10 11 cfu·kg -1 each of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lac… Show more

“…Urea levels of Sarda kids, regardless of the feeding treatments, are similar to those recorded by Celi et al (2008) in Red Syrian kids. Glucose and lipid blood values, which can indicate that the energetic supply of the replacer milk was adequate, are similar to the range reported for kids of different breeds (Chiofalo et al, 2004;Celi et al, 2008;Zumbo et al, 2011) at the same age of the kids of the present study.…”

“…Statistical analysis evidenced differences between the groups for total protein, creatinine and Mg (P < 0.05). Even if statistical differences between the treatments were recorded, blood protein levels were similar to those reported for naturally fed Red Syrian kids by Celi et al (2008) and also creatinine levels were similar to those found in kids of Sicilian breeds (Chiofalo et al, 2004; (Vazzana et al, 2013). Mbassa and Poulsen (1993) reported that urea blood levels are influenced by age with the highest values in young goats, but in the present study urea concentration was lower than that reported for primiparous lactating goats of Sarda breed reared with extensive methods (Pazzola et al, 2011b).…”

“…Lactobacillus sp, one of these bacterial communities with probiotic activity, has an impact on food conversion and a potential effect on WG, as demonstrated in farm animals [26], [27], [28]. Lactobacillus sp treatment results in higher metabolic activity, lower levels of non-esterified fatty acids, triglycerides, urea, and an increase in the levels of alkaline phosphatase and creatine kinase [35]. Vendt et al treated 120 healthy infants (up to two months), with either regular formula, or formula supplemented with 10 7 CFU/g L. rhamnosus strain GG.…”

“…Various formulations of probiotic have been used as feed supplements for ruminants (Puniya et al, 2015). Administration of probiotics separately and in combination has significantly improved feed intake, feed conversion rate, daily weight gains and total body weight in goats, chicken, pig, sheep and equine (Chiofalo et al, 2004;Samli et al, 2007;Casey et al, 2007). Probiotics have been used to modulate gastrointestinal health such as improving lactose intolerance, increasing natural resistance to infectious diseases in the gastrointestinal tract, suppressing travelers' diarrhea and reducing bloating (Liong, 2007).…”
