Effects of the coadministration of Huatuo Zaizao pills and aspirin on hemorrheology and blood coagulation in rabbits

Abstract: Abstract. Huatuo Zaizao pills (HT) is a compound used in Chinese medicine for the treatment of cerebrovascular diseases. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of the coadministration of HT and aspirin on hemorrheology and blood coagulation in rabbits. Rabbits were randomly divided into the control, HT, aspirin and HT plus aspirin groups (n=5 animals per group). The rabbits were treated with HT at a dose of 1 g/kg, aspirin at a dose of 5 mg/kg or HT (1 g/ kg) plus aspirin (5 mg/kg) administered by … Show more

“…In this study, some haemorheological parameters commonly used for diagnosis and prevention of CVD and evaluation of the clinical therapeutic effects of drugs promoting blood circulation [27] were monitored. WBV, as an important haemorheological parameter, is associated with CVDs; abnormalities in WBV can cause tissue ischaemia more rapidly [28,29]. In this study, CXC could significantly influence WBV at both low and high shear rates, yet aspirin only had effects on WBV at low shear rates (Figure 2 and Online Supplementary Table S1).…”

“…The Huatuo Zaizao pill (HT), a pure natural preparation derived from plants, which is a TCM formulation marketed in China [ 6 ]. HT was listed in the pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China Part I (Pharmacopoeia Commission of the People’s Republic of China, 2015), as HT can be used to promote rehabilitation after stroke.…”

“…Despite the fact that Huatuo Zaizao pills are administered to promote the rehabilitation of stroke patients, the mechanisms of their pharmacological action are still unclear. Combined administration of Huatuo Zaizao pills and aspirin prolonged the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), prothrombin time (PT), and thrombin time (TT) and it decreased whole blood viscosity (WBV) and plasma viscosity (PV) in rabbits, potently affecting hemorrheology and blood coagulation (47). Huatuo Zaizao pills treatment increases the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and the level of neurogenesis in animals with cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury, which may be associated with functional recovery after stroke (46).…”
