Effects of the Digital Economy on Carbon Emissions: Evidence from China

Abstract: In order to reduce carbon emissions for sustainable development, we analyzed the impact of China’s digital economy development on carbon emissions. Based on the panel data of 30 Chinese provinces from 2009 to 2019, we measured the level of development of China’s digital economy using the entropy method. The relationship between the digital economy and carbon emissions was analyzed from multiple perspectives with the help of the fixed-effects model, the mediated-effects model and the spatial econometric model. … Show more

“…As can be seen in Figure 1, the level of the digital economy has grown significantly over time in all provinces, almost all provinces increased by more than 100% compared to 2011. Our empirical results further augment the findings of Zhu et al (2022). This is mainly due to the Chinese government's policy support for the digital economy and its strong infrastructure capacity.…”

“…Some of the findings suggest that the digital economy has a positive effect on the improvement of environmental quality. First, the adoption of various advanced digital technologies has led to a significant increase in the production capacity of enterprises, which in turn reduces pollution emissions (Li Z. et al, 2021;Zhu et al, 2022). Secondly, the application of digital technology also improves the level of environmental regulation, broadens the channels of environmental regulation (Granell et al, 2016), and enables effective maintenance of ecological and environmental quality.…”

“…The internet, cloud computing, and big data are the key technologies for the development of the digital economy [ 32 ]. These key factors break through the boundaries of region and time, accelerate the flow of factors, ease the constraints of region and time on the allocation of resources and factors [ 33 ], reduce the waste of resources and energy, and thus reduce carbon emissions. Second, with the rapid development of the digital economy, the construction of new infrastructure around the country continues to improve.…”

“…The development of the digital economy is closely related to the internet and information infrastructure. This paper selects the number of mobile IPV4 addresses, the base stations of mobile phones, the lengths of optical cable lines, broadband subscriber internet ports, and the popularisation rate of mobile phones to reflect the construction level of the digital infrastructure [ 39 , 40 ].…”
