Effects of Track-Seeking Motion on the Flying Attitudes of Ultralow Flying Sliders

Abstract: IntroductionA gap flying height of less than 5 nm is required for ultrahigh density recording. For such ultralow flying sliders, the changes in FH during track-seeking motion not only cause signal loss, but also significantly increase the risk of head-disk contact. Moreover, the presence of nanoscale adhesion forces, such as intermolecular and electrostatic forces, adversely increases the FH drop and even causes head-disk impact. In order for a reliable head-disk interface to be maintained, the FH change and c… Show more

“…A precondition to achieve an optimal recording density is a hard disk recording head which provides both a flying height adjustment and a second stage actuation capability for fine tracking [1][2][3]. To fulfill these requirements in a cost competitive way, a slider with an integrated microactuator (SLIM) was proposed [4].…”

“…THEORETICAL APPROACH A quasi-static approximation of track-seeking motion was carried out in order to reduce the computation effort of track-seeking simulations [4]. The change of seeking velocity and disk rpm affect the variation of skew angle.…”

“…As the seeking velocity and the disk RPM change, the difference between the geometrical and effective skew angles is varied. The additional torques which are used in the simulation were calculated by Juang's equation [4]. …”

“…Also most research related to DTM was carried out for a static flying status over DTM. However, this paper shows the dynamic characteristics considering the track-seeking performance using quasi-static approximation [3] over DTM using CML simulator. Fig.l shows the ABS of slider and Fig.l(a) and (b) describes the continuous and DTM ABS with distributed groove, respectively.…”
