Effects of Ultrasonic Treatment on the Physicochemical Properties and DPPH Radical Scavenging Activity of Polysaccharides from Mushroom Inonotus obliquus

Abstract: Polysaccharides from Inonotus obliquus exhibited many biological activities including antitumor, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, immune-stimulating effects, and so on. Ultrasonic treatment is now an usual proceeding technique for the extraction of some bioactive constituents. But there was no information about the effects of ultrasonic treatment on the physicochemical properties and DPPH radical scavenging activity of polysaccharides from I. obliquus until now. Ultrasonic technique was an effective method to extrac… Show more

“…It could be inferred that the cleavage of protein and the rupture of main chain accounted for the decrease of Mw value upon thermal treatment. The molecular weight of Ul-IOPS obviously decreased from 12.20 Da ×10 4 Da to 6.88 Da ×10 4 Da and 2.98 Da × 10 4 Da, suggesting that the molecular weight of the ultrasonic treatment polysaccharides was lower than that of extraction by hot water, which could be explained as that ultrasonic wave could degrade high molecular weight polysaccharides to small ones [14].…”

“…The polysaccharides of I. obliquus were extracted based on the method reported by Fu et al [14]. Briefly, the sclerotia of I. obliquus were refluxed with 80% (v/v) ethanol at 80 • C for 2 h for three times.…”

“…As it was reported, extended proportion of crystalline regions in polysaccharides lead to an increase in the peak temperature and enthalpy value for removing moisture and degradation [18,19]. Changes in thermodynamic as well as morphological characteristics of USEP might be due to the more compact arrangement in polysaccharides, which was induced by ultrasonic treatment.…”
