Effects of Vitamin E and Selenium on Fertility and Lamb Performance of Yankasa Sheep

Abstract: Effects of vitamin E and Selenium administration on fertility and lamb performance of Yankasa sheep were evaluated. Thirty post pubertal ewes (1-1 1/2 years of age) and nine rams (2-2 1/2 years of age) were used for the study. The ewes were randomly assigned into 3 groups (n = 10). Animals in group 1 served as control and were administered 1 ml normal saline. Animals in group 2 were administered 90 mg Tocopherol acetate (Vitamin E), while group 3 received injection containing a combination of 100 mg tocopherol… Show more

“…Oxidative stress has been linked to infertility, implantation failures, and pregnancy loss [ 49 , 50 ]. Reactive oxygen species affect a lot of reproductive processes, including folliculogenesis, oocyte maturation, ovulation, corpus luteum formation, and regression, as well as implantation and fetal development [ 51 ]. Al-Hizab and Mostafa [ 50 ] reported that doramectin administration induced a number of pathological changes, including congestion of ovarian blood vessels and endometrial edema after 3 weeks of double therapeutic dose and ovarian degeneration, leading to excessive atresia of follicles after a prolonged period of injection of the drug.…”

“…It was reported that malnutrition of ewes resulted in a low body weight and body condition score, which had a negative effect on oocyte quality, resulting in lower cleavage and blastocyst formation rates. Musa et al (2018) [126] reported that vitamin E administration alone and in combination with selenium improved reproductive performance in ewes.…”

“…(CG), ewes served as control. Ewes in the G2: (SeG) was dosed with organic selenium 3 mg/ewe orally for 14 days from IVS inserts according with Ali, (2009) and Musa et al (2018). And the G3: (N-SeG) were received nanoselenium 0.2 mg/ewes orally for 14 days from IVS insert according to Stefanov et al (2018).…”
