Effects of water re-allocation in the Ebro river basin: A multiregional input-output and geographical analysis

Abstract: The quality and availability of water are affected by numerous variables, through which the evaluation of water uses from different perspectives, and policy proposals to save water have now become essential. This paper aims to study water use and the water footprint from a river basin perspective, taking into account regions, sectors, and municipalities, while considering the physical frontier along with the administrative sectors. To this end, we have constructed a multi-regional input-output table for the Eb… Show more

“…Comparing Table 2 with Table SI12, which presents direct effects, the impact on irrigated farming represents more than 75% of the total effect in all regions. This is a consequence of the farm sector's low backward coefficients since its products are by nature primary goods (Almazán-Gómez et al 2019), which makes agriculture stronger in forward coefficients. Backward coefficients, of course, reflect the capacity of a given sector to drive other economic activities when demand parameters vary (Duarte et al 2017), covering the direct and the indirect effects of changes.…”

“…Specifically, and following the naming of the literature (Zhang et al 2019;Almazán-Gómez et al 2019), m regions are considered within which n sectors exist. Hence, the MRIO model has mxn linear equations, R being the superscript, S the regions, i being the subscripts, and j the sectors:…”

“…The RAS method has the advantages of low data cost and fast table compilation speed [19]. It has been widely used in the update and compilation of input-output tables in many countries and regions [20,21]. The specific update steps of the input-output table in the NTM are shown in Figure 2.…”
