Efficacy and safety of acupuncture for chemotherapy-induced leucopoenia: protocol for a systematic review

Abstract: IntroductionMany cancer patients experience leucopoenia during chemotherapy. Granulocyte- colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is used to treat chemotherapy-induced leucopoenia (CIL) but has various limitations. Clinical trials have indicated that acupuncture may prevent bone marrow suppression and increase leucocyte counts after chemotherapy. The objective of this review is to assess the efficacy and safety of acupuncture for treating CIL.Methods and analysisThis systematic review will electronically search the … Show more

“…In fact, many integrative oncologists have adopted acupuncture as a complementary or alternative medicine. Furthermore, evidence-based research increasingly shows that acupuncture can relieve many uncontrollable symptoms, including cancer pain 15,16 (noted as evidence level I), chemotherapy-related side effects, 1,17,18 hot flush or arthralgia related to hormone therapy, 19,20 and xerostomia relevant to radiotherapy. 21,22 With regard to neuropathy, acupuncture has been widely used in diabetes-related neuropathy 23,24 and carpal tunnel syndrome, 25,26 as well as CIPN.…”

“…According to WHO statistics in 2020, there were 19.29 million new cancer cases worldwide, with 80% of patients experiencing bone marrow suppression during tumor chemotherapy or radiotherapy. This suppression often leads to dose reduction, treatment limitations, or even discontinuation, which are significant obstacles in cancer treatment(Nian et al , 2016). Apart from patient age, physical condition, and drug selection, environmental factors such as altitude may also exert significant influence on post-chemotherapy bone marrow suppression in AML patients.…”
