Efficacy and safety of oral minoxidil in female androgenetic alopecia

Abstract: Oral minoxidil (OM) has been reported to be effective for androgenetic alopecia (AGA). In this retrospective study, we share our experience of using OM for >24 weeks in 12 patients with female AGA (Ludwig scale I-3-III). Twelve women (aged 18-66 years; mean age 36.66 ± 18.79 years) with AGA (Ludwig scale I-3-III) were recruited. The starting dose of minoxidil was 0.50 mg daily; at 3 months, the dose was increased to 1.50 to 2 mg daily. Efficacy outcome measures were evaluated at baseline and after 24 weeks and… Show more

“…ese studies used doses ranging from 0.25 mg to 2.5 mg while studies with higher doses were associated with more frequent side effects [Table 3]. “…In a retrospective study published by Vastarella et al . which included 12 patients with AGA treated with oral minoxidil, starting at 0.50 mg daily for 3 months and afterwards increasing the dose to 1.5–2 mg daily, an overall 38% and 23% improvement of hair density in the frontal and vertex area respectively was observed after 24 weeks 10 . The most common adverse events found were mild hypertrichosis in 25%, mild postural dizziness in 8.3% and mild peripheral oedema in 25%.…”

“…In this last case, the authors did not define whether the relationship was causal or casual. 5,14 In a previous case report of frontal edema, Güngör et al implied the topical minoxidil application after mesotherapy caused the adverse event, since mesotherapy with biotin, when done alone, was not associated with any side effects. 15 In our patients, the edema mostly arose in the first two sessions and lasted between 1 and 4 days, with a favorable outcome after a local cold compress.…”
