“…[1217] In TCM theory, most cases of PUD can be classified as spleen qi deficiency (SQD) syndrome, in which the patient's spleen (an abstract organ responsible for transporting and transforming food and water that differs from the organ in Western medicine) and qi (a kind of abstract energy that sustains life) are weakened by disease to the point that are unable to function normally, resulting in a range of gastrointestinal and systemic symptoms.
