Efficacy and safety of topical ciprofloxacin/dexamethasone versus neomycin/polymyxin B/ hydrocortisone for otitis externa

Abstract: 7 days treatment with CIP/DEX otic suspension administered twice daily is clinically and microbiologically superior to N/P/H otic suspension administered 3 times daily in the treatment of mild to severe AOE, and is equally well tolerated.

“…Thus, clinical cure reached 79.7 per cent for ciprofloxacin plus fluocinolone acetonide and 70.8 per cent for ciprofloxacin alone. 40 In our study, the mean duration of pain did not differ between ciprofloxacin administered alone and ciprofloxacin plus fluocinolone acetonide (72.6 vs 72.2 hours, respectively), the mean duration of pain being 3 days in both cases, which is lower than the 3.8 days with ciprofloxacin and dexamethasone. 38 Furthermore, similar results were recorded in a metaanalysis of 18 clinical trials, which showed that clinical cure rates of 65-80 per cent were obtained with topical anti-microbial therapy in acute otitis externa.…”

“…Before tacrolimus therapy, the average total duration of complaints corresponded to the time of applied local treatment based on corticosteroids and antimicrobials. While this standard medication is successful in the short‐term therapy of acute EO, 3 it is ineffective and unsuccessful in the long‐term treatment of relapsing chronic EO. This is due to the fact that in contrast to other inflammatory processes, which are usually accompanied by hyperemia, chronic EO results in a poorly perfused inflammation area.…”

“…Eczematous integument changes of the acoustic meatus have an important role to play in individuals' predispositions 2 . The standard therapy consists in the local application of corticosteroids, antibiotics, or antimycotics 3 . Chronic EO develops if the duration of infection exceeds 4 weeks or if more than 4 episodes occur per year.…”

“…Eczematous integument changes of the acoustic meatus have an important role to play in an individual's predisposition 3 . The standard therapy consists of a local application of corticosteroids, antibiotics, or antimycotics, 4 but some patients continue to have symptoms despite treatment. Various medications are used for the treatment of therapy‐resistant chronic external otitis without consensus in the literature.…”
