Efficacy of a novel formulation of metaflumizone plus amitraz for the treatment of demodectic mange in dogs

Abstract: A novel spot-on formulation containing metaflumizone plus amitraz (ProMeris/ProMeris Duo for Dogs, Fort Dodge Animal Health, Overland Park, KS) was evaluated for efficacy against demodectic mange mites in naturally infested dogs. Sixteen dogs were allocated to two equal groups and individually housed. Eight of the dogs were treated topically with metaflumizone plus amitraz at the proposed minimum dose rate (20mg/kg of each of metaflumizone and amitraz, 0.133ml/kg) on Days 0, 28, and 56. The other eight were tr… Show more

“…It is likely that self recovery in LD might be due to cooperative actions of CD8+ and CD4+ T cells against the mites. Conversely, generalized demodicosis is considered to be a severe disease requiring prolonged treatment, which is often difficult and potentially life-threatening (Fourie et al 2007). Compromised CD4+ T cells may not be complementary to CD8+ T cells, thus self recovery in GD may not be encountered.…”

“…Its efficacy had been evaluated in naturally infested dogs in a clinical study (Fourie and others 2007) but, in addition to the bad odour lasting for a while on the dogs and in the environment when applied indoors, a number of treated dogs developed a drug reaction (pemphigus-like syndrome) (Oberkirchner and others 2011). …”

“…The disease is considered to be chronic and generalized when it persists for at least six months with involvement of no less than 50% of the dog's body or involvement of the four limbs. This form has been reported as being difficult to treat and the outcome is often frustrating (Paradis & Pagé 1998, Fourie et al 2007). Dogs 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15 and 18 (7/18) had been developing clinical signs of infestation for at least six months prior to being enrolled into the study and they presented the generalized form of demodicosis.…”
