Efficacy of glutamine-enriched enteral nutrition in an experimental model of mucosal ulcerative colitis

Abstract: Intact intestinal epithelium and associated lymphatic tissue act as body defences against luminal toxins. This barrier may become threatened or compromised in inflammatory bowel disease, leading to an increase in mucosal permeability and subsequent translocation of endotoxins. The effect of oral glutamine on gut mucosal ornithine decarboxylase activity and on endotoxin levels in portal vein blood was studied in a guinea-pig model of carrageenan-induced colitis. Despite failure to show induction of ornithine de… Show more

“…Glutamine also plays a central role in colonocyte nutrition and integrity. 30,31 In addition, the preventive effects of diets supplemented with glutamine on intestinal integrity were reported during experimental severe colitis, [32][33][34] although no therapeutic effect of glutamine on colitis was reported. 35 In our study the oral administration of glutamine for 2 days after the pathogenesis of colitis significantly decreased the histological score of colon tissue from DSStreated mice (Fig.…”

“…Studies in animal models of inflammatory bowel diseases have indicated potentially beneficial effects of glutamine supplementation (Fujita & Sakurai, 1995;Ameho et al, 1997), but this may not be related simply to an improvement in the intestinal function and barrier. In animals and man, enteral or parenteral nutrition supplemented with glutamine is associated with improved lymphocyte function and antioxidant capacity compared to standard TPN (Furst et al, 1997).…”

“…The concentration of glutamine was chosen to match that used in previous similar studies [13,16,17] . The amount of food and water consumed by each animal was recorded each day (SDS-RM3A rat chow (Special Dietary Services, UK) and tap water) and animals receiving glutamine were pair-fed with animals in the control group.…”
