Efficacy of selected pesticides against synanthropic mites under laboratory assay

Abstract: The available formulations of multicompound pyrethroids (permethrin/S-bioallethrin/piperonyl butoxide, permethrin/pyriproxyfen/benzyl benzoate), benzyl benzoate, neem and some field acaricides are effective in suppression of synanthropic mites in laboratory assays. Their LD(90) are lower than those of traditionally used organophosphates or single-compound pyrethroid formulations.

“…These findings extended the spectrum of possible uses of these products from house dust mites to stored product mites (Colloff 1990;Downing et al 1990;Rembold 2005;Sánchez-Ramos and Castañera 2003;Suhaili and Ho 2008;Stará et al 2011).…”

“…In a previous study, it was found that compounds that are highly toxic to house dust mites (e.g., Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and D. farinae) are also effective for the control of Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Stará et al 2011). Of the tested acaricides, benzyl-benzoate, neem, and a multi-compound acaricide based on the combination of benzyl-benzoate, permethrin, and pyriproxyfen (hereafter denoted benzyl-benzoate/permethrin/pyriproxyfen) were among the most effective acaricides.…”

“…In agricultural and industrial facilities, controls include fumigation, contact, and residual acaricidal sprays and dusts. Numerous efÞcacy tests have been performed with experimental and formulated acaricides against mold mites in the context of agricultural and industrial settings (Kim et al 2003;Collins and Cook 2006a,b;Palyvos et al 2006;Hubert et al 2007;Jeong et al 2008;Stará et al 2011). In retail facilities, fewer control options are available.…”
