Efficacy of some plant extracts on the mycelial growth of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides

Abstract: The anti fungal effects of some plants extracts namely tobacco leaf, keora seed, keora, mahogoni, gaint indian milky weed, garlic and ginger at different concentrations (30%, 40%, 50%, 60% and 70%) on the growth and development of C. gloeosporioides, causal agent of anthracnose of mango were evaluated. Radial growth of C. gloeosporioides was recorded. The growth inhibition increase with the increase of concentration of all the plant extracts. Highest mycelial growth inhibition (74.35%) was observed in case of … Show more

“…Similarly, Monodora myristica, Argemone mexicana, Tephrosia purpurea, Diodia scandens and Cyathula prostrata were reported to retard the development C. destructivum in culture (Akinbode and Ikotun 2008;Obi 2011;Ogu and Owoeye 2013;Obi and Barriusa-Vargas 2014). In all these evaluations, the botanicals acted by inhibiting spore germination and retarding the radial growth and mycelial biomass of the pathogenic organisms (Amadioha 2003;Mukherjee et al 2011;Ogu and Owoeye 2013;Obi and Barriusa-Vargas 2014). Across concentrations used in this study, extracts of A. cordifolia, T. pachysiphon and L. camara showed moderate to strong inhibition of both spore germination and radial growth of C. destructivum thereby corroborating the reports of findings of the other workers above.…”

“…This was probably due to increased availability of antifungal chemicals in the medium that was responsible for suppressing growth. [20] evaluated the effects of the extracts of Mahogany, giant Indian milky weed, garlic and ginger at 30-70% concentrations on the growth and development of C. gloeosporioides. The study shows that garlic extract at 70% concentration was the most effective.…”
