“…TAB-positive rate is influenced by biopsy length, and a postfixation TAB length of at least 0.5 cm is recommended [34]. Routine bilateral biopsies may increase the diagnostic yield by only 3e5% [35,36] and are therefore not recommended. Similarly, the use of color duplex sonography TAB to guide the biopsy to the site of the largest "halo" sign, which is considered characteristic of vasculitis, does not appear to increase TAB sensitivity for GCA [37].…”

“…Discordant results between TABs Diagnosis of Large Vessel Vasculitis performed on both sides are obtained in 0% to 12.7% of cases according to various studies. 21,[28][29][30] Therefore, routine performance of simultaneous bilateral TAB to increase diagnostic sensitivity is not advised, although performance of a second TAB when the first one is negative can be considered in particular patients with strong suspicion of GCA or in whom obtaining a definitive diagnostic confirmation is considered crucial.…”

“…In our study [13], the biopsy was usually performed on the second side only when the TAB results on the first were equivocal or negative for GCA but there was a very strong index of suspicion for GCA based on clinical findings (in 76 of 363 patients – second biopsy was positive in 7). Boyev et al [42]reported that performing a bilateral simultaneous or sequential temporal artery biopsy improves the diagnostic yield in at least 3% of cases while Pless et al [43]found that in 5%. Danesh-Meyer et al [44], on the other hand, concluded that there is a low yield of information from a second TAB and did not seem to favor doing a biopsy on the other side.…”
