Efficiency investigation of the use of pyrophyllite in ensiling maize plant

Abstract: The paper presents the results of testing the effect of pyrophyllite shale (pyrophyllite) on the quality of maize plant silage, primarily on the production of organic acids, pH value, quality assessment and microbiological safety. The ensiling was done in plastic containers which allowed the storage of 10 kg of chopped green mass. Tested pyrophyllite doses were: 0% in the control treatment (I), 0.5 and 1.0% in experimental treatments (II and III, respectively). Granulated pyrophyllite (100 µm), originating fro… Show more

“…This finding is consistent with the results reported by Herremans et al (2019) who observed a reduction in lactic acid levels in ryegrass and red clover silages supplemented with zeolite, as a silage additive. Similarly, Adamović et al (2020) reported a decrease in the lactic acid content in maize plant silage with the addition of pyrophyllite. However, it is worth noting that the effects of silage additives on lactic acid production vary.…”

“…Pirinç et al (2020) and Konca et al (2021) used straw to increase the dry matter content of pumpkin silages. Additionally, Adamović et al (2020) reported that the inclusion of 1% pyrophyllite could increase the DM levels in maize silage. Bentonite is utilized in various industries as a water binding agent, owing to its remarkable water retention capacity.…”

“…Pyrophyllite also contains certain amounts of potassium, calcium, magnesium, and iron, contributing significantly to plant growth and development. This grade of clay should contain a nearly neutral pH when mixed with other chemicals to provide stability over time (Table 5) [88].…”
