Efficient control system for PCR chips

Abstract: Effective host-local system architecture for PCR chips is presented. The functions required for the control of the chips and their partitioning into the host and the local system are qualitatively analyzed. The results indicated that, most functions can be resided in the host to deliver the benefits on the development period, the system cost, and the maintenance. The control system was implemented with PC as the host and the local system was connected by USB interface, obtaining the superior development and th… Show more

“…In this paper, we proposed a POC molecular diagnostic device capable of a web-based UI and easy maintenance, equipment operation, and monitoring [3]. The use of an open platform, an independent execution for each function, and the introduction of a REST API server facilitated software management.…”

“…The World Health Organization (WHO) proposed ASSURED (Affordable, Sensitive, Specific, User-friendly, Rapid and robust, Equipment-free, and Deliverable to end-users) as a performance evaluation index for POC devices [1]. In this paper, the proposed system used an open platform using disposable polymerase chain reaction (PCR) chips [3]. POC equipment consumes a lot of time and human resources for maintenance, and this can be saved by using an open platform.…”

“…The PCR chip's temperature is controlled in the local system through temperature measurement of the chip thermistor and the periodic control of the heater and fan. The local-host system using the PC has the advantage of reducing the total cost because major functions can be performed in the host [8,9,10,11].…”

“…Because it was difficult to achieve proper resolution with the normal timer provided by the windows OS, a high precision event timer (HPET) was used to achieve a resolution smaller than 1 ms, which was to facilitate various multimedia applications. Note that the local-host system using the PC has the advantage of reducing the total cost because major functions can be performed in the host [9][10][11][12]. …”
