Efficient dynamic bandwidth allocation schemes in Long-Reach Passive Optical Networks- A survey

Abstract: Long Reach Passive Optical Networks (LR-PON) concept is offered as a cost-efficient solution to bring the fiber to the Home, Office, Curb, Building etc. (FTTX). It extends the reach and capacity of traditional PON from 20 km to 100 km using the optical amplifiers. It merges the metro and access domains by reducing the number of central offices (CO). This approach reduces capital and operational expenditure by reducing number of components, along with the network power consumption and design complexity. Tran… Show more

“…In [24], a comprehensive review of recently proposed DBA schemes for Long-Reach PONs is presented, with a particular emphasis on reducing the delay. Within these schemes, the authors introduce a novel approach to enhancing the Quality of Service (QoS) in LRPONs by integrating inter-and intra-ONU scheduling mechanisms.…”

“…Several DBA algorithms have been studied while considering one wavelength in the system [12][13][14][15][16]. McGarry et al provided a comprehensive study about throughput and delay performance of various DBAs with different combinations of grant scheduling frameworks, grant sizing and grant scheduling [13].…”

“…McGarry et al provided a comprehensive study about throughput and delay performance of various DBAs with different combinations of grant scheduling frameworks, grant sizing and grant scheduling [13]. Usmani et al presented a brief study of different DBA schemes for long reach PONs [14]. However, they cannot be directly implemented in NG-EPON without considering the underlying requirements [17,18].…”

“…Such customization is, however, not possible in current OLTs' control planes, and all the tenants are compelled to settle for the DBA implemented by the Infrastructure Provider/Vendor. The impact of the different flavours of DBA on the bandwidth efficiency and latency have been studied in [32,33]. The authors in [32] have surveyed the state-of-the-art DBA algorithms for TDM Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) systems.…”

“…The authors in [32] have surveyed the state-of-the-art DBA algorithms for TDM Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) systems. A comparison between the DBA algorithms for Long-Reach PONs has been presented in [33] reporting on pros and cons of each scheme with a focus on delay reduction and communication overhead. In addition, the channel utilization and strict delay and jitter trade-off has been addressed in [34].…”
