Modern technological industries fused with the Internet-of-Things (IoT) have been advancing rapidly. The joint usage of several technologies has led to the reshaping of the modeling and simulation techniques into the virtualization of physical systems. Thus, the concept of virtual prototyping has emerged as a significant development in distributed IoT applications that includes early exploration, optimization, and security assessments. Several industries have been employing various types of prototyping e.g., virtual platforms, digital twins, and application-specific virtualization techniques, to achieve individual needs for development. In this survey, we clarify some of these concepts and the distinctions between them, provide a comprehensive overview of various prototyping technologies, and discuss how several virtualization technologies play a transformative role in the design and operation of intelligent cyber-physical systems.

Automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are taking more control of Electronic Control Unit (ECU) hardware/software architecture definition and exploration mainly due to the rise of new technologies in ADAS and autonomous vehicles. The increasing number of cars with ECUs containing tens of processors, and the need to accelerate the simulation of thousands of driving scenarios and design parameters to ensure safety and reliability in autonomous driving has expanded the use of Hardware Emulation-In-The-Loop based on its capacity and functional verification merits. In this paper, an integrated heterogeneous system of systems framework to simulate and verify multiple ECUs is presented. The framework allows co-development of the automotive system application software, operating system and controller hardware together with the mechanical system actuators, sensors, and the physical world environment/traffic scenarios all in one. A comprehensive manual/automatic braking system use case consisting of four ECUs at different levels of abstraction is used to demonstrate the tools and interface technologies developed in-house and integrated with third-party tools.

El codiseño hardware-software tiene como propósito mejorar el proceso de desarrollo de un sistema embebido que cuenta con componentes de hardware reconfigurable como FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) y componentes programables por software, como microprocesadores y DSPs. Esta tendencia, plantea un cambio de paradigma con respecto al modelo tradicional y su uso aún no está extendido en la industria. Por su parte, los sistemas radar, son sistemas que tienen requerimientos exigentes para su procesamiento de señal y que se pueden por lo tanto beneficiar de las técnicas de codiseño. En el presente trabajo, se propone una metodología que permita tomar las técnicas del codiseño hardware-software y utilizarlas en el desarrollo de un sistema embebido de procesamiento digital de señal radar. Se plantea un flujo de trabajo y una herramienta en Matlab que permita demostrar la metodología. Esta metodología es evaluada y se encuentran ventajas y limitaciones que son expuestas, y que sirven como insumo para trabajos futuros y mejoras en las herramientas de codiseño.
