Efficient Hybrid Emergency Aware MAC Protocol for Wireless Body Sensor Networks

Abstract: In Body Sensor Networks (BSNs), two types of events should be addressed: periodic and emergency events. Traffic rate is usually low during periodic observation, and becomes very high upon emergency. One of the main and challenging requirements of BSNs is to design Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols that guarantee immediate and reliable transmission of data in emergency situations, while maintaining high energy efficiency in non-emergency conditions. In this paper, we propose a new emergency aware hybrid DTD… Show more

“…In both cases, the number of allocated slots is bounded by a maximum number s max to guarantee the delivery of urgent data within their strict delay requirements (120 ms). The CH then allocates the computed number of slots in the ES period, and updates the information about spreading codes and slot allocation in the BF (5).…”

“…In CBSN, there are two types of traffic generated by the composing BSNs: periodic traffic that is produced by the BSNs who are in a state of regular observation, and bursty traffic that is generated by the BSNs in emergency state that happens when the activity of the monitored person or its environment changes suddenly (5). CBSNs present therefore the following challenges:…”

“…Authors [35]- [40] introduced several improvements to network performance and reduction in data transmission delay by several enhancements on MAC protocols, to illustrate an example is combining several protocols to take advantage of certain property from each protocol. For instance, Bou Dargham et al [39] design a protocol that guarantee immediate and reliable transmission, where they designed a protocol that combine the high delay efficiency of DS-CDMA with high energy efficiency of DTDMA. As a result, this scheme outperform other schemes in terms of delay and packet drop percentage.…”

“…Thus, correct and fast detections of emergency cases are the two main challenges of BSNs. Another challenge facing BSNs is the restricted energy capacity of the sensors [6]. The corresponding energy consumption originates from sensing, processing, and communicating data via the radio transceiver.…”
