Efficient Reaction Based Colorimetric Probe for Sensitive Detection, Quantification, and On-Site Analysis of Nitrite Ions in Natural Water Resources

Abstract: We have developed a novel aza-BODIPY probe for the sensitive colorimetric detection of the nitrite ions in the aqueous medium by a simple and direct method. This probe selectively recognizes the nitrite ions through a distinct visual color change from bright blue to intense green with a sensitivity of 20 ppb. Uniquely, this probe can be coated on a glass surface to fabricate a simple solid-state dipstick device that can be used for the visual detection of the nitrite ions in the presence of other competing ani… Show more

“…Nitrite concentrations in EBC are in the μM range and are compatible with these detection limits. However, despite the low detection limit provided by these methods, EBC samples are usually pretreated to induce the appropriate reaction and/or to eliminate interfering compounds, such as chlorine 29 . The benefit of using electrochemical methods is that pretreatment steps are not required; more importantly, both the sensor and the instrumentation readout can be readily miniaturized, thus enabling the development of point-of-care diagnostics and even real-time wearable health-monitoring devices.…”

“…[22][23][24][25] We have recently reported squaraine-basedR amanr eporters for the construction of theranostic nanoprobes for photothermal-chemotherapya nd au nique Ramanp robe based on tetraphenyle thylene (TPE) derivatives to detect the prostates pecific antigen in LnCaP cell lines assisted by SERS fingerprinting. [39][40][41] However,n oa za-BODIPY dyes have been reported to date as Raman signature molecules, which may be because of their poor solubility in aqueous medium and because it has been challenging to incorporate these compounds with nanomaterial substrates such as gold or silver nanoparticles. The aza-BODIPY dyes, whicha re one of the closest analogues of the widely used BODIPY dyes, are characterized by their strong NIR absorption,h igh photostability, and low fluorescenceq uantum yields.…”

“…Nitrite (NO 2 − ) ion, commonly detected in water and food, has proven to be a great threat to human health [1][2][3][4]. Excessive intake of NO 2 − with water or food can lead to a variety of diseases, such as intrauterine growth restriction, spontaneous abortions, infant methemoglobinemia and birth defects in central nervous system [5][6][7].…”

“…In comparison, design of fluorescent probes for NO 2 − has already attracted great attention owing to the high sensitivity and simplicity. So far, several fluorescent probes have been developed for the detection of nitrite [4,[14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21]. These probes are typically based on the diazotization of amine, which requires strong acidic condition.…”
