We report the effect of the synthesis route of starch-functionalized magnetite nanoparticles (NPs) on their adsorption properties of As(V) and As(III) from aqueous solutions. NP synthesis was achieved by two different routes implying the alkaline precipitation of either a mixed Fe 2 + /Fe 3+ salt solution (MC samples) or a Fe 2+ salt solution in oxidative conditions (MOP samples). Syntheses were carried out with starch to Fe mass ratio (R) ranging from 0 to 10. The crystallites of starch-free MC NPs (14 nm) are smaller than the corresponding MOP (67 nm), which leads to higher As(V) sorption capacity of 0.3 mmol g Fe −1 to compare with respect to 0.1 mmol g Fe −1 for MOP at pH = 6. MC and MOP starch-functionalized NPs exhibit higher sorption capacities than a pristine one and the difference in sorption capacities between MOP and MC samples decreases with increasing R values. Functionalization tends to reduce the size of the magnetite crystallites and to prevent their agglomeration. Size reduction is more pronounced for MOP samples (67 nm (R0) to 12 nm (R10)) than for MC samples (14 nm (R0) to 9 nm (R10)). Therefore, due to close crystallite size, both MC and MOP samples, when prepared at R = 10, display similar As(V) (respectively, As(III)) sorption capacities close to 1.3 mmol g Fe −1 (respectively, 1.0 mmol g Fe −1). Additionally, according to the effect of pH on arsenic trapping, the electrostatic interactions appear as a major factor controlling As(V) adsorption while surface complexation may control As(III) adsorption.

We report successfully synthesizing two-dimensional (2D) and nanocrystalline (NC) Fe2Ni2N/rGO nanohybrid sheets (NHSs) via ammonolysis of as-prepared 2D Ni2.25Fe0.75[Fe(CN)6]2/rGO precursors. We compared the electrochemical properties of the 2D-NC Fe2Ni2N/rGO NHSs as non-precious-metal nitride and graphene nanohybrid electrocatalysts for an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with those of NiFe-based composition. The overpotential and Tafel plot of the 2D-NC Fe2Ni2N/rGO NHSs had their lowest values of 290 and 49.1 mV dec–1, respectively, at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 (0.1 M, KOH). The 2D-NC Fe2Ni2N/rGO NHS catalyst was stable under OER conditions, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy confirmed the stability of the catalysts after electrochemical testing (24 h). The synergistic interactions between the transition-metal nitride and graphene represent unique 2D nanostructured, metallic properties, and graphene sheets with nanocrystalline Fe2Ni2N on them are significantly more efficient and active electrocatalysts. The presented strategy of transition-metal nitride/graphene hybrid nanostructures provides potential for more efficient and outstanding OER electrocatalysts.

The application of sorbent in solving the water pollution induced by heavy metals or metalloids is severely hindered by poor sorption performance and high cost, especially in simultaneous removal. Design and synthesis of nanocomposites as effective sorbents has been widely considered as a promising approach to address this problem. Herein, graphene oxide supported organomontmorillonite composite (GO-OM) was prepared through a facile ultrasonic-assisted method for the first time and exhibited excellent synergetic adsorption behavior for mixed pollutants in aqueous solutions. Unlike previous studies, the simultaneous removal process can be well-described by the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The sorption capacities of GO-OM are very high for both metal cations and oxyanionic groups, showing excellent potential in the removal of multiple contaminants. Our study also reveals that GO-OM has high recycling efficiency and good performance under a low level concentration. All results suggest that GO-OM can be used as effective and ecofriendly sorbents for the removal of combined pollutants in an aqueous environment. This work contributes to developing high-performance graphene materials with organic minerals and gives deep insight into simultaneous sorption of metal ions, which can be potentially extended to other multiple pollutants.
