Efficient Wavelet Packet Modulation for Wireless Communication

Abstract: Based on the good time-frequency localization of the pulse shaping, it is possible to build a multicarrier modulation that reduces both narrowband interferences and multipath channel interferences. In this paper, the given solution is based on wavelet theory: wavelet packet based multicarrier modulation is introduced and compared to the useful Orthogonal Frequency Domain Multiplexing (OFDM) modulation in a wireless environment with narrowband interferences and multipath channel interferences. Simulations show … Show more

“…However, OFDM suffers from certain drawbacks including high Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) and wastage of transmission resources due to the use of Cyclic Prefix (CP). In light of these facts, several alternatives to OFDM have been proposed, with Wavelet Packet Modulation (WPM) as one potential candidate [1][2][3][4][5].…”

“…In order to design a multicarrier modulation with a significant time and frequency localization properties, a given solution is to use the wavelet theory [4]. A technology in which wavelet transforms/wavelet packets could be used to modulate data into a number of subchannels is called orthogonal wavelet division multiplex (OWDM).…”

“…However, the waveforms after windowing still have relatively high energy in their first sidelobe [2]. Wavelet packet based multi-carrier modulation (WP-MCM) is proposed as an alternative modulation scheme with better spectral containment [3], [4]. However, the tree structure filter bank results in mirror image spectral properties, which makes it difficult to implement the frequency-division duplex (FDD) required for a standard DSL application [5].…”
