Efrect of diethylcarbamazine against Brugia malayi infection on Cheju Island, evaluated in 1965

Abstract: A study on the effect of diethylcarbamazine (DEC) (Supatonin) against Brugia malayi infection was conducted on Cheju Island in September 1965. A total of 182 persons living in a village of Aiwol Myun, Bukcheju-Gun was examined for microfilaraemia. Microscopic examination of smears of 20 microliter of blood revealed a microfilaria positivity rate of 28.5 per cent. At the end of September 1965, 34 confirmed microfilaria positive cases were treated with DEC at a daily dosage of 5 mg/kg body weight. A full course … Show more

“…Detection, extensive DEC treatment and following‐up on LF in endemic areas over the past several decades have contributed to the eradication of LF in Korea (Seo & Lee 1973; Seo & Whang 1974; Seo 1976; Soh & Kim 1977; Paik 1986). Modern living standards, such as availability of electricity, as well as economic development, including construction of new towns in the 1970s (the so‐called Saemaeul movement) greatly reduced the spread of mosquito‐borne diseases.…”

“…Paik [42] prescribed diethylcarbamazine at the dose of 5 mg/kg/day for 5 days (total 30 mg/kg) to 34 of 52 microfilaria positive cases as a short-term concentration method. The total microfilarial count in blood prior to administration was 3,558 and the average count was 104.6.…”

“…However, the infection rate decreased to below 1.0% in the 1980s [16,17,19,29,[31][32][33][34][35]42,44,46] (Table 3). In 2005, peripheral blood smears of a total of 1,543 residents in 11 different local villages in these areas showed no positive cases [48].…”
