eGreenhouse: Robotically positioned, low-cost, open-source CO2 analyzer and sensor device for greenhouse applications

Abstract: Advances in gas sensors and open-source hardware are enabling new options for low-cost and light-weight gas sampling devices that are also robust and easy to use and construct. Although the number of studies investigating these sensors has been increasing in the last few years, they are still scarce with respect to agricultural applications. Here, we present a complete system for high-accuracy measurements of temperature, relative humidity, luminosity, and CO 2 concentrations. The sensors suite is integrated o… Show more

“…To make this information more accessible some low-cost devices have been developed to analyze the behavior of the environment. Some implementations integrate low-cost sensors and embedded systems to facilitate numerous applications [3] , [13] , [14] , [15] , [16] . Many prototypes are based on Arduino technology, an open source microcontroller [17] , to perform this task.…”

“…An alternative solution is sending the data from the above-ground hub at the experimental site to another above-ground LoRa station situated several kilometres from the site in an area with a Wi-Fi signal or Ethernet connectivity. Combined solutions, such as on-site data logging and Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or cellular communication, are also possible (Levintal et al, 2021a).…”

Additional benefits of utilizing opensource hardware are no prior experience with electronics or coding being needed, though it can help (Chan et al, 2020), lower costs than existing commercial hardware (Levintal et al, 2021a), and the option for customized solutions. Specifically, harnessing open-source hardware for LoRa-WUSN lowers such sensor networks' cost and complexity, thus making them accessible for researchers.…”

“…However, the available online information of tutorials, forums, and ongoing developments minimizes the learning curve and can help bridge the gap toward a higher implementation rate of open-source hardware in academic research (e.g., Levintal et al, 2020;Reck et al, 2019;Weissman et al, 2020). Additional benefits of utilizing opensource hardware are: no prior experience with electronics or coding is needed though it can help (Chan et al, 2020), lower costs than existing commercial hardware (Levintal et al, 2021), and the option for customized solutions.
