Abstract: During catheterless renal 131I Hippuran clearance studies, the function of each kidney can be calculated from the area integral, which is derived from the total body curve and to segments of phase II of each nephrographic curve measured for 120 seconds after the injection. For this it is assumed that the course of this phase depends entirely on the function of the renal parenchyma and is not affected by other factors such as urinary obstruction. During investigations of obstructed kidneys, considerable discrep… Show more

“…The problems surrounding the preservability of obstructed kidneys have already been discussed in relation to the dynamic scan, and similar difficulties of over-or underestimation are prone to arise with unilateral catheterless 131-I-hippuran clearances (DOPPELFELD et al 1978;DOPPELFELD and WEISSBACH 1979). Comparative function studies in obstructed kidneys by unilateral catheterless 131-I-hippuran clearance and by the 99 ffi -Tc-DMSA technique mentioned above, suggest that hippuran clearance gives significantly higher values.…”

“…However, the renal function determinations should be interpreted with great care, as an overestimate offunction is possible (Doppelfeld and Weißbach 1979), and there is one exception: 2) Diuresis renography is the method of choice, as it gives adequate information about the degree of obstruction.…”
