Einsteinian gravity from a topological action

Abstract: Abstract. The curvature-squared model of gravity, in the affine form proposed by Weyl and Yang, is deduced from a topological action in 4D. More specifically, we start from the Pontrjagin (or Euler) invariant. Using the BRST antifield formalism with a double duality gauge fixing, we obtain a consistent quantization in spaces of double dual curvature as classical instanton type background. However, exact vacuum solutions with double duality properties exhibit a 'vacuum degeneracy'. By modifying the duality via a … Show more

“…For strong gravity, mediated by the Lorentz connection Γ αβ , in our model we found spin 0 of both parities. This restriction to zero spin modes in due to our simple Lagrangian (64) in which only the scalar and pseudo-scalar pieces of the curvature were allowed. Straightforward generalizations are possible.…”

“…In the general context of the Ashtekar formalism or, more generally, of loop quantum gravity, compare Kiefer [55] and Rovelli [56], the V HMS -Lagrangian was taken up again by Holst [57], Freidel et al [58,59], Khriplovich et al [60], and Bojowald et al [61]; similar parity violating pieces were studied by Mukhopadhyaya et al [62,63], see also the related papers by Mielke [64,65].…”

“…), are determined by a parameter g uni of the GW unification and by the Higgs VEVs. 7 It is discussed that if this "Higgs" φ coming in the graviweak unification could be the Higgs of the Standard Model, then the idea that the vacuum value of φ could be, according to the MPP, an extra (second) minimum of the Higgs field effective potential, turns out not to be viable. Then other scalar "Higgs" field ϕ θ , giving the inflaton and the axion fields, has a Planck scale expectation value, and could have a better chance of being the scalar field unified with gravity.…”

“…The second term is the cosmological constant, Λ = 3 4 v 2 , consistent with (23). The third term -a modification to standard gravitation -is a Stephenson-Kilmister-Yang (SKY) term [19], related to a Gauss-Bonnet topological action. The fourth term is the kinetic action for the Higgs field.…”
