El Hierro Renewable Energy Hybrid System: A Tough Compromise

Abstract: The Gorona del Viento project was characterized in this article, concerning its implementation, as well as several years of exploitation in an isolated location, namely on the El Hierro island. The hybrid system includes a wind farm and a pumped storage power plant, which acts as an energy storage, and all are equipped with a control system. The planned strategy assumed a configuration based on 100% wind energy supply. However, the system does not guarantee the anticipated effectiveness. The problems with the … Show more

“…The wind farm consists of 5 aero generators each with 2.3 MW of power (total 11.5 MW) and a pumping plant of two 1500 kW pump sets and six 500 kW pump sets with a total power of 6 MW. During the windy days the energy excess is used to store water from the lower deposit in the upper deposit as a storage solution (Frydrychowicz-Jastrzębska, 2018). However, the project is still underperforming, due to various technical difficulties like the small capacity of the upper reservoir and the lack of grid stability.…”

“…In addition, desalination plants generate brine waste during its reverse osmosis operations that requires a correct management of its disposal (Kress et al 2020 ). When it comes to renewable energy production in the Canary Islands archipelago, there are internationally recognized models of sustainability, as it is the case of Gorona del Viento in the El Hierro island (Frydrychowicz-Jastrzebska, 2018 ). The use of renewable energies becomes essential in islands rich in natural resources such as the sun, wind or geothermic (Rodríguez et al 2021 ).…”
